Are your teachers trying to navigate the curriculum changes required to comply with the new civics requirement specified in (S2631)? The requirements to change your curriculum to meet the hands-on, project based learning and literary standard changes can feel daunting. The addition of civics education, more diverse historical content and new standards for media and financial literacy can seem like a lot to accomplish alone. We have developed a proposed solution with some of our teachers that we'd like to discuss with MSAA attendees.

We have designed a civics curriculum project custom-tailored to the needs of the new curriculum requirements. Our project focuses on local, state and federal government comparisons, as well as the three branches of government. The project includes a combination of lesson plans and three-day trips to explore each branch of government. The program culminates at the Washington D.C. Civics Summit. Students will experience a firsthand view of civics in action. Students will journal their experiences thoughout to formulate their individual projects based on what is learned.

This is an interactive session. We look forward to speaking with you about S2631, what it means for teachers across the Commonwealth, and how the Legislative Summit, Judicial Summit, Executive Summit and Inaugural Massachusetts Civics Summit can not only provide a solution for this requirement, but create a meaningful new school tradition as well.
